Letter from the superintendent

Dear Howland Community,

It was a busy first semester at Howland Schools.  We are excited to embark on the second half of the year.  Recently, we had to call for two calamity (snow) days due to dangerously low temperatures where kids were able to stay home and spend time with friends and family or maybe, work hard on their studies.

The Howland Board of Education, administration, teachers and support staff vow to renew their commitment to excellence in all practices and protocols being implemented for kids as we move into the months where the bulk of state testing occurs.  We also recognize that these tests are only one measure of the success of our kids and understand the importance of meeting social and emotional needs to ensure every child has an unimpeded opportunity to thrive. We are excited about our recent introduction of social/emotional services for children who are battling levels of stress, anxieties or behavioral needs that impact a student’s ability to function inside the classroom or school.

In the coming months our students will be participating in a variety of academic and athletic activities.  You can find a calendar link of those events on the Howland Schools website. We value and appreciate the support our families and community continue to offer by attending these activities, which showcase our kids outside of our school walls.  We are already planning for the second annual Howland Schools’ “ALL ONE” Showcase in May where kids, staff and community entities will share the great things happening in our schools and have an opportunity to thank our partners for supporting the vision and goals of the schools and community.

We continue to move forward with the initiative to bring utilities efficiency and air-conditioned classrooms to our buildings.  We have also begun to install LED lighting fixtures. These savings are valuable to our schools now and long-term as we seek to give back to our kids and families for their support in the passage of the last operating levy and beyond.  We are evaluating other opportunities to give back to our kids and families and are committed to the elimination of pay-to-participate fees for extra-curricular activities and athletics for the 2019-2020 school year.

Finally, students in Brian O’Dell’s high school multimedia class have been working hard this school year, gaining hands-on experience in broadcasting as they live-stream the district’s activities through Maximum Media Sports and WiredIN.  Recently, the students received a Gold in Video Production, Gold in Digital Art and Silver in Digital Art at Scholastics.  The Golds Awards are being judged nationally in New York City. Students also received National Honorable Mention in Game Design in New York.  Projects have also been submitted into Courageous Persuaders PSA Contest, Golden Lion Film Awards in Cincinnati, the Butler Art Show, Congressional Art Show and Ohio Governor’s Art Show.  Two projects have also been submitted into the Student Production Awards.  Congratulations to our team!
