The Howland Local Schools’ Campus Campaign is a districtwide effort to support students, programs and initiatives.  Howland Schools strives to provide diverse activities, innovative programs and a dynamic mix of learning opportunities to position its students as tomorrow’s leaders.  The district takes pride in its collaborations with community organizations and local businesses, all of which benefit students in the Howland Local School District.

WHAT IMPROVEMENTS HAS THE DISTRICT ALREADY MADE WITH MY TAX DOLLARS?
Through the use of permanent improvement tax dollars, the board has made several significant improvements over the past few years at no additional cost to our residents. They include:
-Enhanced security at all school building entrances
-Installed reverse osmosis filters at drinking fountains
-Updated lighting to energy efficient LED bulbs
-Installed classroom air conditioning
-Continuation of the one-to-one student-to-Chromebook initiative
-Upgraded district WiFi
-Replacement/repair of building roofs
-Improvements to gymnasium bleachers

WHAT DISTRICT IMPROVEMENTS ARE CURRENTLY PLANNED?
Through the generosity of the Howland Stadium Foundation, local businesses and the Howland Board of Education’s direction of permanent improvement funds, the school district will soon begin making improvements to its facilities.  The Howland Stadium Foundation has successfully raised more than $327,000 for stadium improvements to include the installation of artificial turf.  In recognizing the significant, long-term cost savings associated with artificial turf over natural grass, Howland Schools is committed to raising additional funds to complete this project in adherence to the district strategic plan.  The district anticipates an annual savings of more than $100,000 in materials, resources and labor related to the operation and maintenance of the current fields.   This equates to more than $1 million dollars in savings over the life of an artificial turf field.  The district will allocate an annual percentage of those savings to the turf project and future stadium and campus improvements.  The Howland business community has long supported students in the Howland Local School District.  The district is also working to secure new video boards, which will allow businesses to continue their support of our students and schools in a more visible manner.  Business owners, who choose to buy ad space on the video boards, will reach over 70,000 people who enter through our gates and doors each year.  The video boards will also allow for our video production students to gain valuable hands-on experience in media production and advertising. Our fans will also enjoy a more engaging experience during their visit to our stadium and high school gym.

WHAT DISTRICT IMPROVEMENTS ARE PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE?
Howland Schools has identified a number of other projects its hopes to tackle in the future. Over the course of the next several years, the school district hopes to construct a performing arts auditorium and make security enhancements to the Shaffer Avenue parking lot, which is adjacent to the high school’s main entrance.

WHERE DID THE MONEY COME FROM TO START THIS CAMPAIGN?
The Howland Stadium Foundation has successfully raised over $327,000 for stadium improvements, which includes the installation of artificial turf. The Howland Board of Education has also put several cost saving measures in place, including the conversion to LED lighting, which provides up to 53% savings in electrical lighting utility costs each year.   Additionally, there are significant long-term cost savings associated with artificial turf over natural grass.   The district anticipates saving more than $1 million dollars in materials, resources and labor over the life of the turf field.  The district will allocate an annual percentage of those savings to the turf project and future stadium and campus improvements. WHY SHOULD I DONATE? Despite the significant contributions from the Howland Stadium Foundation and the board of education, the district has not yet met its goal of fully funding its improvement projects.
