Howland Middle School students give back, purchase blankets for foster children

Carnation Sale
Howland Middle School’s community service club, HMServes, recently held a fundraiser to benefit My Very Own Blanket. The group was able to purchase brand new blankets for foster children in Ohio through their annual carnation sale that took place in April during lunch.  HMServes students sold 988 carnations, which raised enough money to purchase 37 blankets.

HMServes is Howland Middle School’s largest club with 55 members.  The group was created three years ago to provide the opportunity for middle school students to give back to the community.  In its short existence, the club has benefited the local community in countless ways.

“One of the requirements of HMServes is to support either a local or national organization each year with a fundraiser.  In the past, HMServes has supported Kids In Need Foundation and The Big Brothers Big Sisters. In addition to these organizations, HMServes has helped several local pet shelters, food pantries, the Howland backpack program, Soles of Luv, Hospice, Paw Pantry, Shepherd of The Valley, and Someplace Safe,” said advisor Janice Castner.
