In an effort to spread holiday cheer and demonstrate their appreciation, members of Howland Middle School’s Student Senate and Choir have recorded video messages for local healthcare workers who are supporting the community during the pandemic.

The video messages will be sent to Trumbull Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and Shepherd of the Valley.  Then on Friday, December 18, 2020, Howland Middle School’s Student Senate will partner with Outback Steakhouse to deliver 100 individual meals to employees at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Trumbull Memorial.

“I’m very blessed and grateful to be helping because they are doing so much for us in our community and we need to show them how much we appreciate them because what they are doing is truly amazing,” said 8th grade student Tabby Schlatt.

Howland Middle School’s Student Senate is a student-led organization that focuses on student-led initiatives throughout the school year.  Under the direction of teachers Marie Fryda and Jeff Kamovitch, Student Senate has remained active during remote learning.

“I am proud of our students for developing this initiative and making it happen. It was entirely brought forth by our students and it is reassuring to see our students putting others before themselves and supporting others in their community during a pandemic,” said teacher and Student Senate advisor Jeff Kamovitch.

"As an advisor to Howland Middle School Student Senate, I am amazed how the students, staff, and administration came together in such a short time to accomplish this endeavor, paying tribute to the medical staff in our community.  They have truly inspired all of us without even knowing it and we are thankful!  The contribution by the Student Senate and the choir is a small token of our appreciation to those frontline workers. We want to let them know how much their giving inspires us to do the same," said teacher and Student Senate advisor Marie Fryda.

Staff will be leaving Howland Middle School at approximately 11:15 a.m. on Friday to travel to Outback Steakhouse to pick up the individual meals.  The goal is to deliver them to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Trumbull Memorial around noon.
