cultural awareness

Howland High School is celebrating cultural diversity through a unique, two-week food tasting event.

For the second year in a row, Student Senate has organized Cultural Awareness Week with the help of food service supervisor Justin Pancake.  Daily through Friday, April 1,  Student Senate highlights various cultures during the morning announcements while Pancake and the high school’s cafeteria staff prepare daily meals in an effort to help students further understand those particular cultures.

“We thought this event would be a great way to branch out to all students because everyone eats lunch, and since lunch is free this school year, it would provide students with the opportunity to learn about different cultures,” said Student Senate Co-President Lauren Roberts.

Pancake’s two-week menu showcases Polish, Indian, Hungarian, German, Middle Eastern, Spanish, Italian, Asian and Greek dishes.

“One of the best ways to learn about cultural diversity is through tasting and cooking foods from around the world,” said food service supervisor Justin Pancake.
