Howland Local Schools received recognition for the 2021-2022 Breakfast & Beyond from the Ohio School Breakfast Challenge. The district was recognized for its excellence, innovative and collaborative approach to maximize student participation and access to the school meal programs.

“Over the summer, I worked to redevelop the breakfast menu at the high school in an effort to serve more students. I researched menus at the area’s most popular restaurants that serve breakfast and developed a weekly menu that offers breakfast sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, a breakfast skillet, breakfast pizza, pancake wrapped sausage and breakfast nachos. Since redeveloping the program, we’ve gone from serving between 15 to 30 students each morning at the high school to serving breakfast to nearly 80 students each day,” said food service supervisor Justin Pancake.

School districts that submitted a Breakfast & Beyond story, received a “Super Star” electronic medallion. The medallion signifies their distinguished work in serving meals for Breakfast & Beyond.   Schools achieving this honor were recognized by the Ohio School Breakfast Challenge partners, Ohio education associations and their membership, and other education, health and child focused organizations.

The Ohio School Breakfast Challenge’s mission is to increase access and participation in the School Breakfast & School Meal Programs, ensuring Ohio students start each day ready to learn. The Ohio Department of Education, American Dairy Association Mideast, Children’s Hunger Alliance and Ohio School Nutrition Association are proud sponsors of the Ohio School Breakfast Challenge.
