Vote

For the past three presidential elections, students at Howland Middle School have voted in line with the rest of American voters.

On Friday, October 30, 2020, and Monday, November 2, 2020, students in grades 5-8 will be asked to cast their electronic ballots as Howland Middle School’s social studies department hosts its own presidential election.

The middle school’s social studies teachers have been using the election as a learning opportunity for students.  Over the last couple of weeks, students have gained an understanding of the voting history and process in the United States.

“We believe it is our civic duty to teach them about the democracy that we live in so that when they go out into the world they are more educated future-voters,” said 8th grade U.S. History teacher Megan Sullivan.

Students will be voting during their Tiger Pride class period.  Each Tiger Pride classroom will be assigned a state in an effort to mimic the Electoral College process. For example, the largest Tiger Pride class will be designated as the state of California, which has 55 electoral votes, the most in the United States.
