Howland High School is excited to introduce its new Mock Trial program, offering students an opportunity to explore the legal system and develop critical skills.
Led by teachers Amanda Daquelente and Thom Williams, the program benefits from their experience in speech and debate coaching. In September, Mrs. Daquelente and Mr. Williams attended the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education (OCLRE) conference at the Ohio Supreme Court in Columbus.
"We left feeling confident and excited about the opportunities this program provides," said Daquelente. “We want to thank legal advisor Attorney Gary Rich and our supportive parents for their help in making the team a reality.”
Mock Trial combines theater and debate, with students assuming roles such as attorneys and witnesses. This year's case involves a fictional defamation lawsuit related to an AI-generated parody video. Students analyze legal concepts and prepare cases. They put their skills to the test at the Trumbull County Courthouse on January 17, 2025.
"We are proud of our students' dedication," said Daquelente. "Many are considering legal careers, and we hope this experience fuels their passion."
The team currently has 13 members eager to compete. Students who are interested in joining Mock Trial can do so during Rush Week or reach out to Mrs. Daquelente or Mr. Williams.
