purple star school

The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce has recognized Howland High School with the Purple Star designation, honoring the school's commitment to serving military-connected students and families.

The Purple Star designation is awarded to schools that meet strict criteria established by the Ohio Purple Star Advisory Board. These criteria ensure that schools provide the necessary support for students and families connected to the military, addressing their wellness and academic needs, especially during times of transition.

"At Howland High School, we take great pride in fostering military awareness and providing opportunities for students to explore potential careers in the armed forces. Through programs like STAR, modeled after Junior ROTC, we help students develop citizenship, leadership and a commitment to service. We also administer the ASVAB to sophomores and guide them in understanding their results, empowering them to make informed decisions about their futures. Our staff engage in military experiences to better support students, and we celebrate those entering service through events like Military Signing Day. From recognizing dedicated staff to supporting military families through outreach initiatives, our goal is to build a school culture that honors our military-connected community,” said Sean Borawiec, Howland High School Student Services Specialist and CBI Coordinator.

“We are incredibly proud to be recognized as a Purple Star school. This designation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, particularly individuals like Sean Borawiec, who go above and beyond to support our military families and students through unique programs and opportunities” said Howland High School Principal Joseph Simko.

Howland High School will hold the Purple Star designation for three years and will be eligible to apply for renewal in the fall of 2027.

The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Director, Stephen D. Dackin, stated in a letter to Howland Local Schools, “I applaud and appreciate your commitment to serving military-connected students and families… The Purple Star award signifies your school's demonstrated commitment to serving these students and families."
