Howland High School senior Bo Kuang is preparing to celebrate two major milestones this spring. Kuang is on track to graduate from high school later this month and, just weeks later, earn Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from Youngstown State University.

“Balancing high school classes while earning two college degrees is an incredible accomplishment,” said Principal Joseph Simko. “Bo’s humility, dedication, and work ethic have really made him stand out.”

Kuang’s interest in math and computer science started with a love of puzzles, trivia, and finding connections between ideas. He enjoys Sudoku, crosswords, and quiz bowl competitions, and says he likes the challenge of working through problems with limited information. Those interests helped spark his passion for mathematics and led him to move quickly through advanced coursework while continuing to take on more complex concepts.

After graduation, Kuang plans to pursue a career in mathematics research, with a focus on abstract algebra and its applications. Abstract algebra studies mathematical systems and patterns that can help explain concepts used in areas like physics, astronomy, and computer science.

“Bo’s dual graduations are an outstanding achievement,” said Superintendent Kevin Spicher. “His success is something our entire school community can be proud of, and we know he has a bright future ahead.”
