This school year, Howland High School’s Student Senate has made it their mission to celebrate diversity.  Once a week, they’ve been hosting a Diversity Dialogue Series.  They’ve learned about African American culture, Asian American culture, LGBTQ, LatinX, Differently Abled, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean student perspectives. Members of Student Senate also hosted a professional development opportunity for the district’s high school staff about race relations in the high school and the community. Recently, Student Senate sponsored a Cultural Diversity Awareness Week. Each day, Student Senate recognized a cultural representative from the high school’s diverse student population.  During the week, the cafeteria staff also served unique dishes to celebrate each culture.

In addition to highlighting diversity and culture, Student Senate has also been busy hosting a donation drive for Love, Vincent, which is an organization that helps families with terminally ill pets.  Student Senate collected treats, blankets, leashes, toys, peanut butter, tissues, and other comfort items for pets and their family.

Student Senate is also working with the district administration to purchase and install a digital message board that will inform the community of what's taking place within the school district.
