Members of Howland High School’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Club (FCCLA) are learning lessons this school year that will help them way beyond high school.
Under the direction of advisor Shannon Stevens, the 34 members of FCCLA have spent the first part of the school year participating in activities and projects that promote personal growth and leadership development. FCCLA is the National student organization for Family and Consumer Sciences.
“By focusing on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner, and community leader, our members are able to develop skills for life through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation,” said advisor Shannon Stevens.
In October, students began volunteering with the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project in Brookfield by walking dogs that are currently at the shelter. FCCLA also donated to the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project’s fundraiser. Once a month, members of FCCLA read books to students at Springs Primary School, and at the beginning of 2022, they will begin their pen-pal writing project. This holiday season, FCCLA is hosting a holiday coloring and activity book donation drive for patients at Akron Children’s Hospital Beeghly Campus in Boardman. Earlier this school year, FCCLA members completed a school-wide kindness project and a Veteran’s Day Project for the Vienna VFW Post 3521.
