Howland Local Schools Capital Campaign

While embracing its old school traditions, Howland Local Schools has been working hard to bring its new school visions to life. The district has been committed to making districtwide improvements that support students, programs and initiatives through the use of permanent improvement funds and private donations. Back in 2019, the district also partnered with Partners Advocating and Working for Students (PAWS) to help achieve its goals.

Completed Projects by Howland Schools/Private Donors

Robotics Program - 2021

In 2021, Aptiv, formerly known as Delphi, donated $5,000 to Howland Local Schools to sponsor the district’s new Robotics Program and pay for a portion of the team’s registration fees into the FIRST Robotics Competition. The new “Tigerbotics” robotics program exposes students to concepts in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) while showing them how those concepts can be applied in the world around them.

Tennis Courts - 2021

In September of 2021, Howland Local Schools celebrated the grand re-opening of the Ohio Commerce Center Tennis Courts at Howland High School. The renovation was made possible thanks to the generous donations of lifelong, key school partners George and Spiros Bakeris along with their families (Ohio Commerce Center) as well as Dale and Evelyn Gebhardt (Flex Strut). Private donations covered 61% of the $127,300 total cost. The project aligns with the district's strategic plan of combining private partnerships with district permanent improvement monies to upgrade and renovate of district facilities.

Softball & Baseball Fields - 2019

In September of 2019, the district received a $25,000 donation from Dale Sr. and Evelyn Gebhardt to be used toward prepping the baseball and softball fields.

Video Score Boards - 2019

The Howland business community has long supported students in the Howland Local School District. In 2019, the district secured new video boards, which allow businesses to continue their support of our students and schools in a more visible manner. Business owners, who purchase ad space on the video boards, reach over 70,000 people who enter through our gates and doors each year.  The video boards will also allow for our video production students to gain valuable hands-on experience in media production and advertising. Our fans also enjoy a more engaging experience during their visit to our stadium and high school gym.

PAWS

About PAWS

In 2019, the Howland Local Schools teamed up with Partners Advocating and Working for Students (PAWS). PAWS was organized to provide Howland Schools funding to make districtwide upgrades that support students, programs and initiatives. The goal of PAWS is to increase school pride and enhance student experiences through updates to athletics, the arts and technology. Additionally, PAWS works to foster and enhance collaboration between Howland Schools, the Howland community organizations and local businesses. PAWS is a 501(c)(3).

Completed Projects - Howland Schools/PAWS

eSports - 2023

Howland High School introduced an esports program during the 2023-2024 school year, expanding the district's extracurricular offerings. This new program provides students with opportunities to engage in competitive gaming while developing skills in teamwork, communication and strategic thinking. By participating in esports, students can explore potential career paths in technology, game design, and digital media.

Resurfaced Track - 2023

Howland Schools expanded the six lane straightaway to eight lanes and resurfaced the entire track, which serves both the middle school and high school. The cost of the project was approximately $110,000. The track renovation project was financed by 50% district funds and through the support of PAWs and the Howland Tiger Booster Club matching the other 50%. HTBC also purchased new hurdles (additional $25,000).

Digital Message Board - 2021

In October of 2021, Howland Local Schools purchased and installed a digital message board to inform the community of what's taking place within the school district. The digital message board is located just off of East Market Street near Howland High School.

Resurfaced Gymnasium Floor - 2020

In June of 2020, PAWS donated $8,300 to Howland Local Schools to be used toward resurfacing the high school gymnasium floor.

Multi-Purpose Turf Field - 2019

The Howland Stadium Foundation successfully raised nearly $327,000 for stadium improvements to include the installation of artificial turf. In recognizing the significant, long-term cost savings associated with artificial turf over natural grass, Howland Schools committed to raising additional funds to complete this project in adherence to the district strategic plan.  An annual savings of more than $100,000 is achieved through the reduction of materials, resources and labor related to the operation and maintenance of the grass field.  This equates to more than $1 million dollars in savings over the life of the artificial turf field. The district allocates an annual percentage of those savings to the turf project and future stadium and campus improvements.  The field was completed in September 2019.
