Recently, our 8th Grade Music Technology class, taught by Mr. Reynolds, had an exciting opportunity to explore real-world career connections in the field of audio engineering and music technology.
Dr. Dan Keown, a Ph.D. in Music Education from Youngstown State University, visited the class to lead a hands-on workshop on audio synthesis—the process of creating new sounds through audio sampling, electronic instruments, filters and synthesizers. This area of music tech is a dynamic blend of engineering, music composition, coding, gaming sound design and soundtrack creation.
“The kids had a great time and were very excited to learn about careers in this field and the connection between music technology, engineering, computer coding and technology,” said teacher Shawn Reynolds.
Students got hands-on experience creating new sounds and compositions as it is done in audio and sound-engineering fields. Students also had the chance to explore various instruments including a classic one you may remember from Star Trek, called a Theremin.
