May the 4th Be With You from our food service staff at Howland High School!!

Congratulations to all of the 2023 Howland Community Scholarship recipients! There were 50 scholarships awarded this year at the breakfast held earlier this week!

This past week our 7th and 8th grade band students had the opportunity to receive specialized instruction from professionals in the field of music.
Our 8th grade clarinet players had the opportunity to work with aspiring professional clarinet teachers from the 'YSU Clarinet Society' to perfect their clarinet skills.
In addition, our guitar and bass guitar players from our HJHS Caribbean Steel Pan Ensemble "Steel Tigers" had the incredible opportunity to work with John Anthony, who is the guitarist with the famous group The Vindys.
Our HJHS students learned amazing real-life professional music skills and had an amazing experience working with professionals in the field! The musical excellence continues in the Howland Music Department!

Earlier this month, Howland High School's Student Senate hosted their Cultural Awareness event, in which students learn about cultural diversity largely through food!
Our food service director Justin Pancake spent three to four months preparing this year's menu. This year, students had to opportunity to try chicken piccata with pasta and broccoli from Italy, beef empanadas with street corn from Mexico, gyros with cucumber salad from Greece, shepherd’s pie with soda bread from Ireland, bulgogi over white rice with kimchi from Korea, spring rolls with stir-fried baby bok choy from south Asia, El Cubanos with fried plantains from Cuba, Mediterranean falafel with ratatouille and poutine with a Montreal hot dog from Canada.

This is the only Principal fundraiser we run for the entire school year, and all proceeds go back to the students. The funds help offset the cost of field trips, assemblies, holiday projects, classroom technology, and much more. I appreciate your support now more than ever!

Students in our high school child development class recently designed interactive bulletin boards geared toward students in preschool.
Interactive bulletin boards are designed to get students up out of their seats and moving. They aren’t just meant to look good. This style of classroom bulletin board is meant to be seen and used by students!
The high school students are divided into teams. They must plan their board and present it to other students in the class, who then do a peer review of the board.

On Thursday, our CCP biology students participated in the Howland Science Symposium showcasing their experiments. Students who earned a superior rating during the event will be recommended to move on to the Lake to River Science Day at Youngstown State University, where they can earn scholarship money!

Congratulations to Zachary Datchuk for winning the HIS Spelling Bee. We also want to recognize Yianni Poulos, who placed second!
