The Howland band traveled to Tennessee and visited RCA Studio B in Nashville, where students participated in a recording session in a professional studio setting. Opened in 1957 and known as the “Home of 1,000 Hits,” Studio B played a key role in shaping the Nashville Sound and expanding the reach of country music. Artists including Elvis Presley and Dolly Parton recorded there. Today, the studio is preserved as part of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and offers guided tours, giving students the opportunity to record in the same space where many well-known songs were produced.

Future scientists on the move! Our science students, along with teacher Jason Lee, traveled to Kent State University to participate in Regional Science Day, showcasing their hard work, innovation and passion for discovery!

What an unforgettable experience! The Howland High School Girls Flag Football Team, celebrating their inaugural season, recently traveled to Berea to visit the Cleveland Browns practice facility. The team had the incredible opportunity to meet and take photos with Browns defensive tackle Dawand Jones!

Our 5th and 6th grade students recently competed in the Challenge 24 tournament. Congratulations to Nicholas Nemtz for earning 3rd place overall! Great work to all students who participated and represented our school.

Our Top 10 readers and Top 10 fundraisers for the HIS Read-a-thon were recently recognized for their outstanding efforts with a special celebration lunch sponsored by Raising Cane's. Students enjoyed a delicious meal along with a fun prize package as a reward for their hard work and dedication to reading. Congratulations to all of our top participants, and a big thank you to Raising Cane’s for their generous support of our school!

Our 5th and 6th grade students recently participated in intramural sports with help from the high school cross country team and Coach Libert. It was a good opportunity to connect with high school athletes and learn from their experiences!

Our staff is spending the day engaged in professional development! Professional development days give our staff time to collaborate, plan and continue improving the learning experience for Howland students.

Topics include:
• Maintaining the culture of Capturing Kids’ Hearts across classrooms and the district
• Developing a district-wide AI policy and discussing how AI can be used as an educational tool
• K–12 departmental work on curriculum mapping and academic strategies
• K–12 intervention strategies aligned with current legislation
• Literacy planning aligned with state standards
• Test preparation and Teacher-Based Team meetings

Our Howland Junior High Challenge 24 team recently competed in a county-wide tournament and did an outstanding job representing our district!

Team members included Sean Johnson, Joey Kaszowski, Logan Nicholas, Mason Pegg and Krosbie Shipman.

Sean Johnson stepped up from the alternate pool and competed in two rounds. Great job rising to the challenge! Joey Kaszowski and Krosbie Shipman advanced to the semifinals, showcasing excellent math skills.

In the 7th and 8th grade division:
🥈 Mason Pegg earned 2nd place
🥉 Logan Nicholas earned 3rd place

We are proud of all of our participants for representing Howland Junior High so well!

Our junior high students recently traveled to Trumbull Career & Technical Center to tour the campus and learn about the many program opportunities available as they begin thinking about their high school pathways. A big thank you to TCTC for welcoming our students and providing such a great opportunity to learn and explore their future options!

Reminder: There is no school on Monday, March 16 due to a staff Professional Development Day. Students will return to school on Tuesday!

Howland High School recognized two seniors during Military Signing Day on March 10 for their commitment to serve in the armed forces after graduation.

Calvin Croff enlisted in the United States Army and will attend Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson before serving as a 13U Field Artillery recruit.

Blake Flowers enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserve. His basic training location and future duty station will be determined at a later time.

Congratulations to both students for their commitment to serve our country.

Students at Howland Intermediate School were recently rewarded for demonstrating positive character through the school’s ROAR Board program. Students who showed Responsibility, Ownership, Acceptance and Respect were recognized on the ROAR Board and entered into a drawing. Winners were treated to lunch at Taco Bell as a celebration of their efforts. Thank you to Taco Bell for hosting our students and helping recognize their positive behavior!

Congratulations to our February Students of the Month at Glen Primary School! These students were selected by their teachers for their outstanding character and effort in the classroom. As part of the celebration, they enjoyed a made-to-order ice cream sundae with Principal Roth.

Our Health, Safety & Wellness group brightened up the U-area windows with drawings and uplifting messages for everyone to see! These colorful creations are a reminder that brighter days are ahead and that kindness, hope and self-care matter!

The Howland High School Prep Bowl teams had a strong showing at the 36th Annual Mahoning Valley Quiz Bowl Championship at Columbiana High School. The tournament included 26 teams from Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana and Mercer counties. The teams are coached by Jerry Young.

Howland’s varsity team (Bo Kuang, Dante Marsco, Justin Keating and Brady Morrone) won its regular season division, advanced through the championship bracket, and earned the overall Mahoning Valley Quiz Bowl Championship title!

The junior varsity team (Nicholas Alvetro, Sophie Natale, Niko Raptis and Alex Vansuch) also won its regular season division and finished second in the Junior Varsity Championship Tournament!

With the championship win, the varsity team advances to the state tournament on April 11 in Bellefontaine, Ohio.

The Howland Intermediate Prep Bowl Team won the TCESC Elementary Prep Bowl Competition this weekend. Congratulations to team members Carter Orr, Theo Perry, Cameron Mohney, Ryeliegh Ramos, Nicholas Nemtz and Owen Bachinger, along with coaches Angie Walls and Audra Buckley! Great work representing Howland!

At a recent Howland Board of Education meeting, Sarah Lanham, a kindergarten student at Howland Springs Primary School, was recognized with the Pillar of Inspiration Award.

Sarah has Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle Bone Disease). As the name suggests, her bones are extremely vulnerable to fractures. She recently underwent surgery to place a steel rod in her leg to assist with walking.

She is unable to participate in recess or gym and instead goes to the clinic to play board games or cards with our school nurse! Even a routine fire drill requires her to wait patiently for a wheelchair to help her exit the building safely.

Despite these challenges, Sarah comes to school each day with a smile. She enjoys her friends, works hard in the classroom, and is surpassing all kindergarten standards! She is also quick to offer a hug to classmates and staff!!
